E-Glass Description

E glass fiberglass is the most common and widely used form of fiberglass reinforcement, known for its strength, electrical insulation, and cost effectiveness. It’s the “workhorse” fiber used in everything from boat hulls to wind turbine blades to PCB laminates.

E glass is made from an alumino borosilicate glass, engineered specifically for fiber production and electrical insulation. Typical composition by weight includes:

Silica (SiO₂): ~53 — 57% provides structural stability
Calcium oxide (CaO): ~18% improves durability
Alumina (Al₂O₃): ~12 —15%; increases mechanical strength
Boron oxide (B₂O₃): ~5—10% lowers melting point for fiber drawing
Magnesium oxide (MgO): ~5% contributes to stability
Low alkali content (<2%): critical for electrical insulation performance

This chemistry allows the glass to be drawn into extremely fine, consistent filaments. E glass fibers are surprisingly strong for their weight:

Tensile strength: ~1,9503,400 MPa (depending on filament condition)
Young’s modulus: ~72—85 GPa
Filament diameter: ~10 microns (about 1/7 of a human hair)
Dielectric strength: ~60—100 kV/mm (excellent electrical insulation)
